MayBad Advice…
People with an invisible illness often have to deal with suggestions and advice that imply they are not really sick, but they just aren’t trying hard enough to get better. Sometimes people are genuinely trying to be helpful, but they don’t take the time to learn about the illness before giving their advice.
I thought I would post a comment exchange I had with a very condescending individual who had the cure to my incurable illness. I’m hoping if you read this, you will more carefully consider how you treat someone with an illness you can’t see.
Mr. Helpful’s “advice” is bolded…
Wow that guy said some of the most ableist shit I have heard in ages.

MarWhen I get really tired, like CFS-y tired, it’s like I’m living in molasses. Everything around me seems to go six times slower and not in a good way, and all the speech and things I have to concentrate on is muffled and far away like my head is underwater.
I don’t want to sleep. I keep sleeping longer and longer as time goes by. It was 18hrs, then it was 22hrs.
What if one day I just don’t wake up at all? -

FebSuffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is…
- Not being just tired but also weary.
- Being exhausted and being unable to sleep.
- Sleeping 24hrs and going back to bed an hour later.
- Being awake for three days straight because you can’t sleep.
- Being awake for three days straight because you’re afraid you won’t wake up.
- Losing friends because they think you’re making excuses.
- Not being asked how you are anymore because people don’t want to know.
- Making friends who actually give a crap and vaguely understand.
- Being told you’re “just tired” and to “power through it” when you can’t or are too tired to.
- Not being able to make plans in advance because you don’t know how you’ll be an hour from now, let alone a week or a month from now.
- Dropping out of school, college, university, losing your job, not being able to commit to a job, not being able to commit to a person, not trusting yourself to be okay long enough to do anything.
- Barely having the energy to get up in the morning, let alone shower every day, go out, make food or drink.
- Finding all the little things get worse - phobias, allergies and more.
- Being lonely because you don’t have the energy to go out and see friends or, worse, make friends to begin with.
- Not wanting to be around people.
- Wanting nothing more than to be around people.
- Being told you can will your illness to go away.
- Knowing you’ll be ill for the rest of your life and you’ll always have to worry about it coming back if it ever does go away.
- Feeling cheated out of a life you deserve.
- Being too tired to care.
- And a thousand other things, of course. Add to this if you reblog and have anything to add.

Jan"What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)? A person with CFS feels completely worn-out and overtired. This extreme tiredness makes it hard to do the daily tasks that most of us do without thinking — like dressing, bathing, or eating. Sleep or rest does not make the tiredness go away. It can be made worse by moving, exercising, or even thinking. CFS can happen over time or come on suddenly. People who get CFS over time get more and more tired over weeks or months. People who get CFS suddenly feel fine one day and then feel extremely tired the next. A person with CFS may have muscle pain, trouble focusing, or insomnia (not being able to sleep). The extreme tiredness may come and go. In some cases the extreme tiredness never goes away. The extreme tiredness must go on for at least 6 months before a diagnosis of CFS can be made. CFS is sometimes called chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). It is also sometimes called myalgic encephalomyelitis (mye-AL-jik en-SEFF-ah-loh-mye-LYE-tiss), or ME."

JanBook Reading List 2012
Last year I read one book.
One.
A massive one.
This year, I am determined to read at least five.
I have a lot of issues reading. My concentration just isn’t there and I blame my chronic fatigue for that, but I am going to try this year. And this is my reading list. Which I will be updating as I go.
To Read • Read •
Given Up On• Reading• A Game of Thrones (Book 1 in the Song of Ice and Fire)
• Paper Towns by John Green (I am 50% through this damn book. I WILL PREVAIL.)
• Imzadi (TNG book)
•
Endless Summer by Chris PetersonThe first one is gonna be the most challenging. The second is practically fanfiction so I’ll probably find that pretty simple to read. The first is something like 800 pages though ~_~ (819 in fact o.o)
I’ll make it tho.
I will.

ETA 08/05/12: So I managed to get to 49% of Paper Towns. I’ve kinda given up on Game of Thrones and I’m poking Imzadi with a grumpy face on. Determined to finish Paper Towns though.
